Catering for Nut Allergies and Anaphylaxis

Nut allergies are among the most common and serious food allergies. If you’re organising catering for a meeting or event and know (or suspect) someone has a nut allergy, it’s essential to plan carefully.

At White Henry, we take these risks seriously and want to make sure you have the information you need to keep everyone safe.

Why Nut Allergies Need Extra Care

  • Around 1 in 50 Australian children have a peanut allergy, with many carrying it into adulthood.
  • Peanuts and tree nuts are among the leading causes of life-threatening anaphylaxis.
  • Even tiny trace amounts can trigger severe reactions.

Anaphylaxis is not just a mild allergy. It’s a potentially life-threatening, whole-body reaction that can come on quickly and requires emergency treatment.

Common Misunderstandings

“It doesn’t have nuts in it, so it’s safe.”
✅ Even if nuts aren’t listed as ingredients, shared preparation spaces can leave behind traces.

“They’re only a little bit allergic.”
Always clarify: is it a mild intolerance, or an anaphylactic (life-threatening) allergy?

How to Plan Responsibly

Ask attendees directly. Check if their nut allergy is anaphylactic or mild.
Get details early. Let us know as soon as possible so we can suggest the safest options.
Communicate clearly. Include allergy notes in your order and double-check with guests if you’re not sure.

Many people with anaphylaxis are experienced at managing their risk. It’s quite common for them to prefer bringing their own food to avoid any possibility of cross-contamination. We fully support and encourage this choice where appropriate.

How We Manage Nut Allergies at White Henry

At White Henry, we’re committed to keeping your guests safe while making ordering easy:

  • Transparency First
All our standard sandwiches, wraps, salads, and hot meals are prepared in shared kitchens that handle nuts. While they don’t contain nuts as ingredients, they may contain traces. We cannot guarantee they’re safe for anyone with a risk of anaphylaxis.

  • Commercially Packaged Alternatives
For attendees with severe nut allergies, we offer individually packaged, sealed snack items made in nut-free certified facilities. These remain sealed until served to eliminate cross-contamination risk.

  • Clear Communication
We’ll always ask you to confirm if the allergy is anaphylactic. We strongly recommend checking directly with the guest so you can provide us with accurate information.

  • Personalised Support
Not sure what to order? We’re happy to help plan safe alternatives and suggest options that meet a range of dietary needs.
